Free Galaxy Watch Faces: Where They Come From and What “Free” Means
Free Samsung Galaxy Watch faces come from four places: the faces Samsung builds into the watch, Google Play listings marked Free with no in-app purchases, the free set inside a gallery app such as Watch Lux, and faces you make yourself with Samsung's free Watch Face Studio tool. All four install through the normal Galaxy Wearable or Google Play route. What you should not do is download a "free face" file from a website — on a Wear OS watch that is an unknown app, and often not a face at all.
The four free routes at a glance
| Route | What is free | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Faces built into the watch | Every face Samsung ships, including the photo face | The set never grows; new designs have to come from elsewhere |
| Free listings on Google Play | Single faces marked Free with no in-app purchases | Many "free" listings are trials or lite versions — read the label |
| The free set in a gallery app | Watch Lux: a rotating set of free faces, no subscription | The full catalog is Pro; pricing is shown on Google Play |
| Make your own | Samsung’s Watch Face Studio tool costs nothing | Putting it on your own watch needs developer debugging turned on |
Any Galaxy Watch from the Watch4 onward runs Wear OS and can use all four routes. Older Tizen models — the Watch3, the Watch Active2 and earlier — are limited to the faces built into them. If you are not sure which yours is, the model table in our Galaxy Watch faces guide settles it in a glance.
Install a free Watch Lux face on a Galaxy Watch
- Install Watch Lux from Google Play on the Android phone your Galaxy Watch is paired with. The download is free and no account is needed.
- Open the Free collection. It is the same set shown on the free faces page here, and it changes weekly.
- Tap a face and send it. The phone passes it to the watch over the Bluetooth connection they already share; keep the watch nearby while it transfers.
- Switch to it on the wrist. Press and hold the current face, swipe to the new one and tap — the same move as for any face, covered step by step in how to change a Wear OS watch face.
Each new face you send replaces the previous Watch Lux face on the watch; Samsung's own faces are left exactly as they were. Sending a different free face next week costs nothing either.
What a free face usually leaves out
Free is rarely the whole story on a Play listing, and it helps to know the three common shapes. A lite version is a real, permanent face with fewer colours or complication slots than its paid sibling. A trial is the full face for a few days, after which it locks until you pay. And a free tier inside a gallery app is a subset of the catalog that stays free indefinitely, with the rest behind a purchase. None of the three is dishonest, but only the first and third are free in the way most people mean the word, and the Play listing's "In-app purchases" label is the quickest way to spot which you are looking at.
Advertising is the other thing to watch for. A watch face itself cannot show adverts — there is nowhere to put them — but a phone app that distributes free faces can, and some do. Google Play labels those listings "Contains ads", so again the answer is on the page before you tap Install.
Watch Lux is free to download on both stores, with a free set of faces included. Pro unlocks the full catalog, with pricing shown in the store you install from.
Download on the App Store GET IT ON Google PlayAre there free Galaxy Watch faces?
Yes, and more than most people use. Every Samsung Galaxy Watch ships with a set of free faces, including a photo face that takes pictures from your phone. Google Play lists additional faces that are free with no in-app purchases. And gallery apps such as Watch Lux include a set of free faces alongside their paid catalog. None of these require a subscription, a sideloaded file or a download from a website.
The honest caveat is that "free" on a watch face listing covers several different things: a face that is simply free, a cut-down version of a paid face, and a face that is free for a trial period and then asks for money. The sections below separate them, so you know which one you are tapping before it lands on your wrist.
If you want to see what a free face from a gallery app looks like before installing anything, the free faces collection on this site shows the current set, which rotates every week.
What free faces come with a Galaxy Watch?
Samsung includes a set of its own faces on every Galaxy Watch at no cost, and all of them can be recoloured and have their complications changed. The set covers analog, digital, information-dense and simple designs, plus a photo face that shows pictures from your phone behind the time. Which faces are included varies by model and One UI Watch version, and Samsung has added designs with major updates.
To browse the built-in set, open the Galaxy Wearable app on your phone, tap Watch faces, and scroll past the ones already in your carousel to the full list. Faces you have not added yet are installed to the watch when you tap them; faces you remove stay available in the list, so there is no way to lose one. Our Galaxy Watch faces guide walks through changing and editing them on the watch itself.
For a lot of people the stock set is genuinely enough, especially for fitness and dense data, where Samsung's own faces are hard to beat — our best Wear OS faces piece says so plainly. Where the stock set runs out is style: if you want a designed face with its own artwork, you are looking at Google Play or a gallery app.
How do you tell a free Galaxy Watch face from a trial?
Read the Google Play listing before you install. A face that is genuinely free shows Free with no "In-app purchases" label underneath the install button. A listing that says Free but also shows "In-app purchases" is usually a trial, a lite version, or a free face inside an app that sells others. Watch faces and face apps follow the same labelling rules as every other Play listing, so the label is reliable.
Lite versions are the common middle ground: the free face is real and stays free, but it ships with fewer colour options or fewer complication slots than the paid edition, and the paid edition is offered inside it. That is a fair arrangement as long as you know it going in. A trial is different — the face works for a set number of days, then locks or reverts to a stock face until you pay.
Gallery apps work on a third model, and Watch Lux is one of them: the app is free to download and includes a set of free faces that are not time-limited, with the rest of the catalog behind Pro. The free faces are the same designs as the paid ones, not reduced versions.
Can you make your own Galaxy Watch face for free?
Yes, two ways. The simplest is the photo face Samsung ships on every Galaxy Watch: pick it in the Galaxy Wearable app and choose pictures from your phone, and you have a personal face at no cost. The more involved route is Watch Face Studio, Samsung’s free design tool for Windows and macOS, which builds faces for Wear OS watches from the Galaxy Watch4 onward and can send a finished face to your own watch for testing.
Watch Face Studio is aimed at people who publish faces on Google Play, but nothing stops you using it for a single face of your own. It is a proper design tool, with layers, complications and conditions, so expect an evening rather than ten minutes. Installing your face on your own watch goes through the tool's test-on-device feature, which requires turning on developer debugging on the watch and connecting it over Wi-Fi. Samsung's Watch Face Studio documentation covers the setup.
Faces you make this way stay on your watch like any other installed face. Publishing them for other people to download is a separate step through Google Play, with its own developer account and review.
Is Watch Lux free on a Galaxy Watch?
Watch Lux is free to download from Google Play, and a set of its faces is free to install on a Galaxy Watch with no subscription and no time limit. The free set rotates weekly as new collections arrive. Pro unlocks the full catalog of 500+ faces, with pricing shown on Google Play. It works on any Galaxy Watch running Wear OS 6 or later, paired to an Android phone on Android 8.0 or later.
One thing to know before paying for Pro on a Galaxy Watch: Google Play and the App Store are separate stores with separate plans. A Watch Lux purchase on Google Play unlocks the catalog on your Android phone and Galaxy Watch, and nothing on an iPhone — and the reverse is also true. There is no way to move an Apple Watch face onto a Galaxy Watch in any case, because the two platforms use different face formats; our guide to Wear OS watch faces explains that split.
The free faces are chosen from the same categories as the rest of the catalog, so a dark OLED face or a minimal face turns up in the free set as often as anything showier. This week's new collection shows what has just arrived.
Are free Galaxy Watch faces safe to install?
Faces installed through Google Play are the safe route, free or paid: they are reviewed before listing, and Google Play Protect checks them on the device. The faces to avoid are the ones websites offer as a free download file for you to install yourself. On a Wear OS watch, a face is an app package, so a file from an unknown site is an unknown app with all the risk that implies, and many such "free faces" are just wallpaper images that are not faces at all.
The tell is the format. A real Galaxy Watch face arrives through Google Play, through the Galaxy Wearable app, or from a phone app sending it to the watch over Bluetooth. If a page asks you to download a file to your phone and then sideload it to the watch, you have left the safe path. If the download turns out to be a PNG or JPG, it was never a face — at most it is a background for the stock photo face, which you can set for free anyway.
Gallery apps are not exempt from the check. Look at the Play listing's labels, permissions and developer name before installing, exactly as you would for any other app. Watch Lux is published on Google Play by Frame Sixty Labs, and you can see its faces on this site before you install.
